4 Year PhD in Ultra Precision Engineering – Cranfield University

4 Year PhD in Ultra Precision Engineering – Cranfield University
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Ultra Precision Engineering is currently recruiting postgraduate students interested in developing the next generation of ultra precision devices, advanced manufacturing technologies, and ultra high precision manufacturing systems.
The aim of the programme is to train students in advanced ultra high precision techniques and processes, including: advanced metrology, high energy laser micro/nano processing; focused ion beam processing, plasma processing, nanofabrication, graphene engineering and printed electronics machine design.
The programme is structured in two phases: a one-year taught MRes course at Cranfield University and the University of Cambridge; followed by a three-year PhD research programme at Cranfield, Cambridge or at another UK university through the National Centre Programme in Ultra Precision.
The one-year MRes course consists of an intense 11 month master that is research focused. The course comprises taught modules, laboratory modules, and a research project. Taught module can be focused on scientific, engineering or transferable skill activities. Presentation skills, writing skills, entrepreneurial talks and conference organising are complementary activities that enhance the academic experience.
Upon successful completion of the MRes, the students will progress to their PhD from a vast range of research topics that include: manufacturing engineering; laser processes; photonics; materials science; control systems; and machine design. During their PhD many students will be offered the opportunity to work alongside industrial partners allowing them to gain valuable industrial experience whilst receiving an additional maintenance top-up, bringing their stipend up to a possible £20,000pa tax free.
Many industrial sectors require a high level of precision, such as aerospace, medical devices, automotive, energy, security and defence. Students completing the MRes and PhD will be central players in the ultra-high precision wealth creation economy.
We welcome applicants from any field of science or engineering who have obtained a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent). They should possess an innovative approach to problem solving, well-developed technical skills and the potential to become world leaders in the field of ultra precision.
Full EPSRC funding (currently £14,296 student maintenance per year + fees), with additional payments from industrial sponsors taking the tax free stipend up to £20,000pa during the PhD phase is available for UK students and EU students who have settled status in the UK and been resident in the UK full-time for 3 years prior to October 2017. General student eligibility information is available from the EPSRC.
We are unable to offer funded placements to overseas students, although we strongly recommend them to apply if they are self-funded or applying for scholarships from their home country.
We recommend applicants email their CV for consideration before applying. Once the CV is viewed and the student profile is considered suitable for the course then the student must formally apply. There are limited places on the course so we highly recommend those interested to apply as soon as possible.

Freigeist Fellowships for International Researchers in Germany, 2017-2018

Volkswagen Foundation is offering fellowship for international young researchers in all disciplines. Ten to fifteen fellowships for researchers will be awarded per year. The Freigeist funding initiative provides an opportunity for outstandingly qualified, creative and independent early career researchers to conduct their own research. It aims to encourage exceptional research personalities to embark on visionary, risk-taking research projects at the intersections between established fields of research. The ‘Freigeist’ initiative builds upon the previous funding scheme for junior research groups and the Dilthey- and Schumpeter Fellowships which were terminated recently.

Their doctorate must have been obtained not longer than five years previously (with regard to the date of the defense relative to the deadline of the initiative).

Course Level: Fellowships are available for pursuing research programme at the university or research institution in Germany.

Study Subject(s): The ‘Freigeist’ scheme is deliberately open to all disciplines and topics.

Number of Awards: Ten to fifteen fellowships will be awarded per year.

Applications for these modules should be submitted – if possible – within the context of annual reporting on the funded project.
  • A second funding period of up to three years may be provided. This requires a positive evaluation (by the Foundation), generally at the end of the fourth year, and a clear perspective for a permanent position for the Fellow at the host institution. The maximum funding for this second period amounts up to 400,000 Euro.
