Swiss Government Scholarships for International Students

Swiss Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Students
Each year, the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. The research scholarship is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level.  The scholarship covers a monthly payment, exemption of tuition fees, health insurance, air fare, housing allowance, etc.

Swiss Universities that offer Scholarships for International Students

1. ETH Excellence Scholarships
ETH Zurich supports excellent students both from the ETH and from other universities (national and international) wishing to pursue a Master’s degree at ETH with two scholarship programmes: the Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP) which covers the full study and living costs of the students and the Master Scholarship Programme (MSP) wherein students receive a partial stipend and the offer of an assistantship.

2. University of Lausanne Master’s Grants for Foreign Students
The University of Lausanne in Switzerland offers scholarships to international students who wishes to pursue a Masters Degree at the University through the UNIL Master’s Grants.  The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme.

3. EPFL Excellence Fellowships
Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) offers a limited number of fellowships at the Master level to students with outstanding academic records. Anyone applying to an EPFL Master’s Program is eligible. For external applicants, each fellowship consists of a financial package of CHF 16,000 per academic year plus reservation of a room in students accommodation.

4. Graduate Institute Scholarships
The Graduate Institute aims to support students with demonstrated financial need by providing financial assistance, which may take the form of a full cost-of-living scholarship, a partial scholarship and/or a tuition fee reduction. Doctoral students may apply for a remunerated teaching assistant or research assistant position, generally starting in their second year of study. 5. University of Geneva Excellence Master Fellowships
The University of Geneva Faculty of Science, in collaboration with several sponsors, has established an Excellence Fellowship Program to support outstanding and highly motivated candidates who intend to pursue a Master of Science in any of the disciplines covered by the Faculty.  The Excellence Fellowship consists of a grant amounting to CHF 10,000 to CHF 15,000 per year.

6. IMD MBA Scholarships
IMD offers a number of scholarship programs for international students from different countries and backgrounds. Each scholarship program awards around CHF 25,000-50,000.

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) is a young international institute dedicated to basic research and graduate education in the natural and mathematical sciences, located in Klosterneuburg on the outskirts of Vienna.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • Applicants must fulfil the Marie Curie mobility requirements in order to be selected. Applicants must either be relocating to Austria. Candidates already located in Austria are only eligible if they have been in Austria for a total of fewer than 12 months during the 3 years previous to the deadline of the respective Call.
  • You must have formally completed all requirements of your PhD and provide a copy of your diploma prior to the start of your employment (which cannot be later than 5 months after the fellowship offer is issued).
  • Your proposed research must match with the research carried out on campus.
  • Postdocs who are already employed at IST Austria are not eligible to apply.
  • All applications must include the ethics self-assessment form to be considered eligible.

International applicants can apply.The Foundation awards scholarships to overseas students who aspire to study or conduct research in Japanese universities or graduate schools. Its scholarship fund is supported by the contributions of Rotarians throughout Japan.The Foundation is Japan’s largest private scholarship organization, both in terms of program scale and number of scholarships awarded.

There are several conditions requiring Japanese language ability depend on the Rotary District where applicants’ targeted the university/graduate school is located. If the applicants come to Japan to have the entrance examination (e.g., to take a written exam or interview), they must return to their residing country to apply for the scholarship. Those who enroll in undergraduates must submit a copy of admission, and those who enroll in graduate schools must submit a letter of recommendation from his/her supervisor/professor in Japanese graduate schools of their choice. If not submitted, their application will be rejected
  • Scholastic and Health Requirements- Have an enthusiasm for study and clear-cut future goals, an awareness of and respect for cultural differences, and ability to express oneself fluently and to communicate smoothly, and both the mental and physical health needed to sustain one’s life as an overseas exchange student.

Scholarships are available for pursuing Ph.D., postdoctoral, research programs and fine arts at one of the public funded universities or recognized institution.The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or Ph.D. and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries.   • Applicants must provide a letter from an academic host professor (including her/his short CV) at the chosen Swiss university confirming why she/he is willing to supervise and support the PhD thesis. Without such support, the application will be rejected.
  • Applicants must have a research proposal including a timeframe. This is the centrepiece of the application. The applicant must devote all required attention to it.
  • Applicants must be in command of the necessary language skills required for the PhD studies/ research.
  • Applicants who have already benefited from a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship are not eligible to apply for a second scholarship.
  • Scholarship holders are expected to move to Switzerland during their grant period.

Postdoctoral Criteria

  • PhD degree
  • No more than five years may have passed between the award of the Ph.D. and the application deadline.
  • Applicants who are in Switzerland for more than one year at the beginning of the scholarship in September are not eligible.
  • Applicants must provide a letter (or email) from a professor at the Swiss host institution stating that they are willing and entitled to supervise the postdoctoral research. Without such confirmation, the application will be rejected.

How to Apply: The application package can be obtained by e-mail from the Swiss Embassy. Please submit 3 sets (=1 original + 2 copies) of application documents in exact order given below: The 1st set contains the original, signed documents plus the confidential letters of recommendation and if applicable the attested translations. The other two sets are the copies of the 1st set except for the confidential letters of recommendation (only 1st set).

  • Signed FCS application form (typed and printed) with photo.
  • A full CV with list of academic publications.
  • A motivation letter (max. 2 pages).
  • A complete research proposal (max. 5 pages, signed), using exclusively the FCS research proposal form.
  • A copy of the letter from an academic host professor (including her/his short CV) at the chosen Swiss university confirming why she/he is willing to supervise and support the PhD thesis.
  • For PhD scholarships at doctoral schools*: A proof that the applicant is being considered for admission. Except: EPFL: accepted admission required.
    *A support letter from a host professor is required in any case additionally.
  • Two confidential letters of recommendation from two different professors in the applicant’s field (use exclusively the FCS reference form – originals in sealed envelopes only for the 1st set).
  • Photocopies of certificates and grade sheets from previously attended universities/colleges and diplomas with grades, starting with the most recent. If not in English, French, Italian or German with attested certified translations.

The International Research Agendas Programme is open for the applicants from all over the world. The programme is available in diverse fields of research.The aim of the programme is to provide an opportunity for young researchers from all over the world.

The Foundation for Polish Science has been in operation since 1991. It is a non-governmental, non-political, non-profit institution which pursues the mission of supporting science.

Scholarship Award: The programme will cover the followings:

  • The Foundation will provide support and assistance throughout the application and implementation period.
  • We anticipate that each project will receive a minimum of 35 million PLN for the first five years.
  • Project funding will include costs of R&D work conducted by the unit implementing the IRAP, costs connected with the efficient functioning of the unit, costs of operating existing infrastructure, cooperation between partners, and knowledge transfer. However, support for new infrastructure will be limited to the purchase of essential laboratory equipment and fit-out. Funding will also cover the costs of research staff development related to project implementation.
  • No significant funding is provided for infrastructure or large-scale equipment.

Scholarship can be taken in Poland

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Applications should be submitted by renowned researchers with significant scientific achievements complemented by considerable managerial experience. The applicant can be a citizen of Poland or any other country, including from outside the European Union.
  • Where required, e.g. if the application covers interdisciplinary research, the application may be submitted by two researchers. However, it should be clearly indicated in the application form which of the researchers is the principal applicant. The application can also be submitted by two researchers if the secondary applicant will be applying to take on the role of Scientific Affairs Director.
  • The applicant applies to be the director of the new institution. Therefore, all the applicants have to be fully committed to implementing the IRAP and therefore be based at the institution for at least 0.5 FTE.

Nationality:  Applicants of all nationalities can apply for the programme.

National Radio Astronomy Observatory is announcing Jansky Fellowship Program to support outstanding postdoctoral scientists whose research is broadly related to the mission and scientific goals of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). International students are eligible to apply for this fellowship program.The NRAO Jansky Fellowship Program provides numerous opportunities for early career scientists to acquire a deep knowledge and understanding of the state-of-the-art in radio astronomy and to establish themselves as innovative, independent research scientists.

The NRAO collaborates with the university astronomy community to develop new instrumentation and technology and helps train the next generation of scientists through its student, co-op, postdoctoral, and Fellowship programs. A new data management system will soon improve every astronomer’s access to NRAO data products for research and education.

Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue postdoctoral programme.

Study Subject: Candidates with interests in radio astronomy techniques, instrumentation, computation, and theory are encouraged to apply.

Scholarship Award: The starting salary for the 2018 Jansky Fellowship program will be 67,500 per year for an initial two-year appointment with possible renewal for a third year. A research budget of up to 17,000 per year is provided for travel and computing support. Fellows are also eligible for page charge support, vacation accrual, health insurance, and a relocation allowance. Up to $3,000 per year is provided to non-NRAO institutions hosting a Jansky Fellow to defray local institutional expenses.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • The Jansky Fellowship Program supports outstanding postdoctoral scientists whose research is broadly related to the mission and scientific goals of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which operates two world-class research facilities: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and the Very Large Array.
  • As a Jansky Fellow, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute to and learn from the development and delivery of the largest and most capable radio telescopes in the world. Research that employs NRAO telescopes in multi-wavelength collaborations is encouraged. Candidates with interests in radio astronomy techniques, instrumentation, computation, and theory are encouraged to apply. Applicants should describe how their research or technical interests coupled with NRAO telescopes or science.
  • The NRAO Jansky Fellowship Program provides numerous opportunities for early career scientists to acquire a deep knowledge and understanding of the state-of-the-art in radio astronomy and to establish themselves as innovative, independent research scientists. Jansky Fellows are encouraged to develop research collaborations with NRAO scientific staff, scientists at U.S. universities, and their colleagues in the international astronomical community. An annual, multi-day NRAO Postdoctoral Symposium fosters collaboration between Jansky Fellows and the Observatory’s scientific staff.

Postdoctoral Scholarships

How to Apply: All materials (including reference letters) must be received by 11:59 pm EDT on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. The Jansky Fellowship job posting is found on the NRAO Careers website at http://jobs.jobvite.com/nrao/jobs. All applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publications list, summary of previous and current research, and a research proposal combined in a single PDF file. If you wish to be appointed at a non-NRAO host institution, you must also include a letter from the department chair that approves your research proposal and agrees to host your Jansky Fellowship at the selected institution.

  • Cover letter: Please specify your proposed NRAO location or non-resident host institution, and your second choice location, which must be an NRAO site (Socorro or Charlottesville).  If you are applying for a split fellowship as your first choice, please indicate both the NRAO location and host institution where you propose to spend your fellowship and the proposed fraction of the time at each location.
  • Research proposal: Your proposed area of research how it relates to NRAO’s mission, strategic goals, observatories, and instruments. Your research proposal should address why having a Jansky Fellowship and therefore a strong linkage to NRAO scientists and facilities is important for achieving your research goals, and the development of your professional skills. Your research plan should also include a justification for your choice of hosting institution (NRAO or US University). If you are applying for a non-resident or split fellowship appointment, it is very important to describe how you, NRAO, and the host institution will benefit from your appointment as a Jansky Fellow.  Your research proposal must be a maximum of four (4) pages long, including figures and references, and formatted with 12 pt font.
  • Curriculum vitae: Include a publications list, a summary of previous and current research, awards, etc. Must be a maximum of three (3) pages of text, including figures and references with 12 pt font.
  • Letter from non-NRAO host institution: Required for applicants applying at a non-NRAO host institution. Applications will not be accepted for non-resident fellowships at UC Berkeley or Caltech for the 2018 Jansky Fellowship Program.
  • Reference Letters: Please arrange for letters of reference from three individuals familiar with your scientific abilities to be provided directly to NRAO. These letters must be received by 11:59 pm EDT on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Reference letters should be submitted via email to Jansky2018-at-nrao.eduusing the file name “ApplicantName” Applicants are responsible for ensuring that letters of reference have been sent by their referees.

Application Deadline: The deadline for 2018 Jansky Fellowship Program application materials, including letters of reference, is Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Award offers will be made starting in early January 2018.  Fellowships normally begin in September 2018.

Study Subject: This thesis will be developed in the scope of the EU-funded project SCOTT (Secure Connected Trustable Things). The project intends to improve the features of security, trustability, dependability, and autonomy of IoT. UPM tasks are mainly related to railway use cases. The PhD thesis will improve the state of the art in aspects like secured communications and QoS for highly reliable applications of WSNs (Vehicle to Vehicle and Vehicle to Infrastructure in the railway domain). The main contributions of this work will be done in the lower layers, mainly from the hardware of the IoT nodes, up to the MAC layer.

Scholarship Award: The salary level corresponds to the average PhD grant in Spain (around 19.000 €/year before taxes).

  • Candidates should have a Master Degree (MSc or equivalent) in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Candidates must have taken courses in the following areas: embedded systems, wireless communications, and electronic design. In addition to this, the applicant must be able to work well in a diverse group, comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, and have strong abilities for critical thinking and structured work. The successful candidate will be expected to take an active role in advising undergraduate students. These competencies are as important as the technical qualifications.
