Two PhD students and one Postdoctoral fellow in biochemistry / physical chemistry

Two PhD students and one Postdoctoral fellow in biochemistry / physical chemistry

Employment level: Time limited employment (temporary)
Location: Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology

Research and graduate education at the department of chemistry and molecular biology comprises a wide scientific field from the atomic and molecular levels all the way through cells to intact organisms. Much of the phenomena studied here impact on our natural environment and living systems. We participate in undergraduate programs in chemistry, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, biology, marine sciences, and pharmacy.

Westenhoff’s research group, where this position is placed, has the goal to uncover structural dynamics of proteins and chemical reactions. The research is placed at the interface of biology, chemistry and physics. We develop new methods based on infrared spectroscopy and time-resolved X-ray scattering to achieve this goal.

We are now looking to hire two PhD students and one Postdoctoral fellow in Biochemistry/Physical Chemistry.

Two PhD studentsWe are looking for a doctoral student within Westenhoff¨s ERC projekt ”MolStrucDyn”. The objectives of the project are to determine structural changes on femtosecond time scales in solution-state chemistry and in photosensor proteins. We plan use ultrashort X-ray pulses from free electron laser sources to reach these goals.

You are expected to be involved in all steps of the project, i.e. to prepare and to perform experiments and to analyse and to publish the data. The choice of sub-project within the ERC project is flexible and will be adjusted to the successful candidate’s interest and experiences.

Eligibility
To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements:
A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she: 1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must: (i) have a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant* subject area in the natural sciences, or (ii) have completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, or (iii) have completed a corresponding programme of relevance to the planned third-cycle programme, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications.

Closing date 2017-07-06

Postdoctorial fellow in biochemistry / physical chemistryThe job assignments may consist of:

  • Investigation into femto- and picosecond structural dynamics of small photochemicals by time-resolved WAXS at X-ray free electron laser sources.
  • Simulation of the experiment, in particular a proof-of-principle study of correlation fluctuation WAXS for chemical reaction dynamics.
  • Structural analysis of the experimental data by computational modelling.

In the project you will record and analyze time-resolved X-ray scattering data from free electron laser facilities, which report on the structural dynamics of chemical reactions.

Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral fellow, the applicant must have completed a Swedish doctoral degree or must have a foreign degree corresponding to a Swedish doctoral degree.
Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the application deadline and who have not held a post-doc position within the same or similar subject area at the University of Gothenburg for more than one year.
