ICFO is offering a postdoctoral position in experimental quantum non linear optics with cold atomic ensembles. We are looking for a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic young scientist who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment.

The position is within the Quantum Photonics with solids and atoms group led by Prof. Hugues de Riedmatten. The group is active in experimental quantum optics and quantum information science. It focuses on the interaction between quantum light and matter in order to build photonic quantum memories and to develop the physical resources to implement quantum information networks and quantum repeaters.

The successful candidate is expected to play a key role in an ongoing research aiming at demonstrating a novel generation of photonic quantum memories based on laser cooled atomic ensembles, with enhanced storage properties and embedded quantum processing capabilities.

Current experiments explore quantum non linear optics with single collective Rydberg excitations, quantum memories with quantum information multiplexing, and the realization of hybrid atomic-solid state systems.

Requirements

Candidates must hold an internationally-recognized Ph.D. — equivalent degree (or evidence of its completion in the nearest future) in a field related to experimental quantum physics, preferably with cold atoms.

The candidate should have a proven track record of experimental research in quantum optics, experimental quantum information or atomic physics. Experience in manipulation of Rydberg atoms, laser cooling, ultra-high vacuum and photon counting technologies would be an advantage. Programming skills (Labview, Matlab, etc) would also be an asset.

The Quantum Nanomechanics group at the Department of Applied Physics, Aalto University, Finland, is looking for outstanding individuals.

Two Postdoctoral Scientists to work on electromechanical quantum systems under the EU Horizon 2020 FET Proactive project Hybrid Optomechanical Technologies (HOT), running from Jan 2017 until Dec 2020.

The HOT consortium is European-wide, joining the leading experimental and theoretical research groups and industrial partners working on optical and superconducting realizations of the interaction of light with mechanical motion. The consortium will lay the foundation for a new generation of devices, which connect, or contain, several platforms at the nanoscale in a single hybrid system. The consortium will aim on realistic applications in the existing application domains of medical (e.g. MRI imaging), security (e.g. Radar and THz monitoring), positioning, timing and navigations (Oscillators) and for future quantum technology.

Main tasks and requirements

The postdoctoral scientists will be responsible for the development and measurement of microwave optomechanical quantum chips based on superconducting microwave cavities and micromechanical resonators made with aluminum or silicon nitride membranes. For this challenging experimental research, we are looking for outstanding candidates who are motivated in experimental, low-temperature solid state physics. We require the candidates to have a proven track record in quantum nanophysics, clean room techniques, and strong interest in micromechanical systems. In addition, the candidates should have experience in running measurements in modern cryogenic systems.

We are seeking experimental physicists with interests in cold atoms and ions, quantum optics, hybrid atomic/condensed matter systems, NV centres, optomechanics, superconducting devices, quantum sensors or related areas, who have a strong research background and the ability to develop an independent research direction related to Quantum Physics/Technology. The School of Physics and Astronomy co-hosts the Centre for the Mathematics and Theoretical Physics of Quantum Non-equilibrium Systems (CQNE), the Midlands Ultracold Atom Research Centre, which is a joint venture with the University of Birmingham and is a member of the EPSRC-funded UK Quantum Technology Hub on Sensors and Metrology, a key part of the UK National Quantum Technology Programme. Within the School there are strong research groups in cold atoms, nanoscience, spintronics, two-dimensional materials and biomedical imaging, including the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre which utilises the applications of atomic sensors in MEG. The School has extensive facilities for nanofabrication and close links with the Faculties of Medicine & Health Sciences and Engineering, which provide an excellent environment for collaborative research.

The Postdoctoral Researcher/Project Researcher position is focused on the research and development of new methods to create biomass based carbon nanostructures for energy storage and water treatment applications. Senior Researcher — Integrated Magnetics and Power Circuits Design

Job description

The trend toward miniaturisation and ever increasing functionality for portable electronic devices is creating new challenges in the fields of electronic engineering, materials science and process development.

A key performance requirement for portable devices is battery life and this can be significantly extended by using a “granular” power supply approach that enables unused functions in the system on chip (SOC) to be switched off. However this requires many miniaturised efficient power converters. In order to limit the output current ripple, power converters require energy storage and usually magnetic devices such as inductors and transformers fulfil this requirement. Traditionally, these magnetic components tend to be very bulky but for switch mode power conversion the value of the inductance required is reduced by using a high switching frequency (20 – 200 MHz).

This makes the footprint of integrated magnetic devices feasible but requires magnetic material and devices that can operate efficiently at high frequencies.

Prof. Ó Mathúna from Tyndall, is the founder of the International Workshop on Power Supply on Chip and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) in the field of power electronics with the citation “for leadership in the development of power supply using micromagnetics on silicon”. In 2015, the Magnetics on Silicon researchers were selected as the UCC Research Team of the Year.

Tyndall Integrated Magnetics research has demonstrated: Highest efficiency for micro-inductors.

Micro-inductors in dc-dc converters up to 100MHz, Highest efficiency coupled inductors, Highest voltage gain & efficiency for micro-transformers, First CAD tool for power micro-inductors, first high frequency integrated power magnetics using pulsed reverse electroplated magnetic material. In addition to integrated magnetics on silicon, Tyndall’s Integrated Magnetics research has addressed PCB embedded magnetic devices. To the present, a magnetic core is provided for both types of integrated devices using electrodeposited magnetic material and windings are fabricated for; magnetics on silicon devices using electrodeposited copper and for pcb embedded magnetics using internal copper tracks.

Tyndall’s Integrated Magnetics team has recently obtained more than €3m funding from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), EU Horizon 2020 and Enterprise Ireland for further world class pioneering research and commercialization of its Integrated Magnetics technology for High efficiency Power Supply on Chip/in Package products. The SFI Principal Investigator funding obtained by Prof. Ó Mathúna is one of 24 such awards in Ireland.

Tyndall is planning a number of strategic hires to expand the existing team.

Reporting to the Head of Group for Integrated Magnetics, the Senior Researcher in magnetics design will play a leading role in the delivery of world-class outputs and the generation of economic impact from research excellence in integrated magnetics devices and associated circuits. This Senior Researcher position will advance the development of a new generation of integrated magnetic devices, with increased efficiency and further miniaturisation. A major part of the research will focus on the development of validated numerical and analytical models for integrated magnetic devices. The models will be used in device optimisation and to determine the requirements, in terms of materials and processes for such magnetic components. A further key aspect of the research is the optimisation of the overall converter system. Analytical/compact models for the various components i.e. switches, inductors and capacitors will be combined to create a converter circuit model.

This will be used to evaluate the impact of circuit topologies, number phases, frequency etc on the overall performance.

The Senior Researcher will drive research collaborations with both academic and industrial partners and engage in the sourcing of research funding from industry as well as Irish, European and international research agencies. They will also contribute to the continued development of a ‘high engagement/high performance working environment amongst all staff by promoting Tyndall’s key values of Leadership, Excellence, Teamwork, People, Entrepreneurship and Optimism.

Responsibilities

  • Design, modelling and simulation of magnetic component structures using analytical techniques and numerical techniques such as finite element analysis
  • Characterisation of inductors and model validation
  • Co-optimisation of power converter/integrated magnetics
  • Initiate, participate in and manage key research projects. This includes support with the preparation of project deliverables, including technical reports, publications and the delivery of prototypes, as well as providing direct technical support to other group members using their knowledge and background in MEMS and systems integration technologies
  • Disseminate research results to research partners as well as scientific and engineering communities as appropriate
  • Participate in the generation, management and commercialization/technology transfer of Intellectual Property
  • Engage in the procurement of research funding from agencies including EI, SFI, EU as well as direct industry collaborations including the estimation of costs, resource requirements and schedules as well as supporting the preparation of contracts
  • Supervise and/or matrix manage the work of other staff and/or research students as required
  • Represent the Group in national and international fora, as required
  • Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Quality Management system and Health and Safety standards
  • Carry out additional duties as may be reasonably required within the scope and level of the post

Requirements

  • PhD in Science or Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years postdoctoral research experience in magnetics (ideally in thin film magnetics) and related power electronic circuit technologies
  • Demonstrated innovation and research excellence in the design, processing and characterisation of magnetic materials and devices, ideally in thin film magnetics
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis & power converter circuit design (Maxwell ANSOFT, PSPICE, etc)
  • Experience in magnetic component electrical characterisation using LCR, VNA etc

The CyI invites applications for Research Assistant(s) for Concentrated Solar Thermal Technologies. The successful applicants will join the Solar Energy and Desalination Group (SED) Group of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) and provide support to the development of the Scientific Work Programme of the CySTEM ERA Chair under the supervision of the Chair. The main field of research is in Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) technologies and the selected candidates will be expected to support the ERA Chair in research activities on this field, which are aligned with the scope of the Scientific Work Programme, contributing to its successful execution.

The goals of the Scientific Work Program of the CySTEM ERA Chair are:

Increase the specialisation of the SED Group in:

  • The development of concepts of small CST poly-generation systems aimed at islands, small isolated communities, and other niche markets based on solar tower technology;
  • The design of solar receivers as key components of the small CST poly-generation system concepts just referred;
  • The development of concepts of heat process applications and system concepts based on Linear Fresnel technology;
  • The development of advanced techniques for the characterisation of solar radiation and other environmental conditions of potential solar systems sites drawing upon the already established expertise in atmospheric modelling.

Enhance the in-house capabilities for:

  • Overall CST system modelling and analysis;
  • Basic and detailed design of solar receivers for solar tower technology;
  • Prototyping of receivers;
  • Testing of receiver prototypes and overall system configurations;
  • Cost assessment and techno-economic feasibility studies.

Ensure that the SED Group becomes a reference group at the international level in at least two of the four research specialisations indicated in point 1 by, among others, carrying out the following actions:

  • Increase the scientific productivity of the group;
  • Increase the linkages of the group to the international solar research community by substantially enhancing the group’s networking activities;
  • Improve existing solar research capabilities;
  • Enhance local outreach;
  • Enhance the Knowledge Management practices and culture at the SED Group.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for helping to shape and advance the Cyprus Institute’s and EEWRC’s research agenda and specially the development of the CySTEM ERA Chair Scientific Work Programme. According to their qualifications the selected candidates will be required to carry out, under the supervision of the ERA Chair, some or all activities related to:

  • Modelling of CST systems using Modelica, Mathematica, and other scientific programs;
  • Construction, date-entry and maintenance of databases related to the scientific literature and the mapping of CST research groups around the world;

The Pervasive Technologies (PerT) Research Area develops enabling technologies for the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm in many applied international research projects. IoT is currently considered by most world-wide large industrial players one of the most promising and trending technology visions – and it is rapidly transforming the way many products and services are delivered. The main challenges at the core of the concept are to enrich objects with communication capabilities and an electronic identity, turning them into a source of information, part of a global, distributed network. As a result, processes can be better managed and optimized.

The selected candidates will join the IoT Service Management Research Unit, where they will be involved in research, design, development and integration of IoT solutions in different application scenarios and pilots, in a secure, scalable and effective way. Main activities will be framed in the context of European initiatives concerning Factory of the Future (FoF) and solutions combining IoT technologies and Cyber-Physical Systems for industrial automation and robotics.

In the short term, the selected candidates will be involved in agile research teams performing analysis, design and development activities mostly adopting and extending open software solutions, in different application scenarios. In the medium-long term, the selected candidates will also be required to grow their competences on best design/development patterns, agile development, open IoT standards and solutions (e.g. middleware, tools, services) also contributing to open-source initiatives.

Requirements and competences

  • MSc degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent;

Post-Doctoral Researcher in Advanced Nanosystem Development for Biomedical Applications
The research focus is twofold: the group designs and applies tools to study disease mechanisms and characteristics in vitro at the cellular level and uses the acquired knowledge to inform the design and fabrication of responsive nanosystems to diagnose or treat diseases minimal invasively. As such, these systems react for example to locally present signals of the disease environment, such as characteristic pH levels or enzymatic activity. For an additional level of control, simple on board circuits are added to activate these systems through externally applied stimuli including heat, acoustic, mechanic or electromagnetic signals, resulting in a diagnostic or therapeutic output such as local, on demand release of drugs. For this purpose, strategies derived from chemical synthesis, synthetic biology and nanofabrication techniques will be applied. This interdisciplinary work is based on the convergence of several fields and integrates methods and ideas from chemists, physicists, computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians. An interdisciplinary approach in strong collaboration with other ETH research groups is foreseen.
The candidate should have excellent academic qualifications, good communication skills, and strong self-motivation. In addition, enthusiasm and talent to engage in challenging health care problems is required. We expect the candidate to be excited to tackle engineering questions, formulate hypothesis and theoretical models and uncover fundamental mechanisms. For part of the team experience in cell culture and animal work is considered a plus.   • defining the adequate virtual models to be used to capture the essence of the machine of vehicle behavior;
  • performing functional analyses using these models;
  • figuring out how to get more information of the system behavior using only a limited selection of tests;
  • developing and implementing multi-physical predictive models as well as optimization algorithms and optimize the configuration and parameters of the system in several scenario’s (robust optimization);
  • validating the optimized designs in real-life test conditions.

Profile

You have:

  • A Phd in Engineering (Mechanical, Electronical, Electrical);
  • A track record in the field of optimization;
  • A keen interest to apply theoretical concepts on practical case problems. Any experience with applications on machines and/or vehicles is a plus;
  • Experience with modelling software (Simscape, Amesim, Matlab, Simulink) and optimization toolboxes (Matlab, Cplex).
