Post Doc — Development of an optical microscope for 3D cellular imaging in microfluidics chip

Post Doc — Development of an optical microscope for 3D cellular imaging in microfluidics chip

RESEARCH FIELD

Optics — Laser optics — Applied optics

ABSTRACT

Though still confronted with multiple challenges, regenerative medicine (tissue reconstruction) offers many promises for the future. One of the current limitations remains the tissue vascularization. Ex vivo, this development requires the use of microfluidic systems to mimic vasculogenesis. A challenge remains however to be addressed: the characterization of the reconstructed tissues without altering their functionality to allow implantation. The aim of the project is to develop an optical imaging system allowing a morphological and functional 3D characterization on a micrometric scale of vascularized tissues inside a fluidic chamber. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and characterizing an innovative optical microscopy system that meets the expected performance to characterize the samples, including spatial resolution, field size, and sensitivity. Coupling and integration with microfluidics systems will be part of the objectives of this development. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment and will have to interact strongly with the biologists and micro-fluidicists of the project to carry out this work.

Post Doc — Modeling ultrasonic acoustic transport phenomena in lithium — ion batteries

Post Doc — Modeling ultrasonic acoustic transport phenomena in lithium — ion batteries

RESEARCH FIELD

Mathematics — Numerical analysis — Simulation

ABSTRACT

Lithium — ion batteries use have grown very quickly in the last years, mainly due to their high energy density. The battery management system is only based on only few key parameters (U, I, T) for estimating of the state of charge, the remaining capacity and to prevent any safety issues. Additional information are required to improve the battery management and the use of ultrasonic acoustic waves to probe the battery’s materials during its operation is very promising. It can provide additional information of great richness on the materials change within the battery. The objective of the proposed post-doctoral internship is to rely on models of propagation of ultrasonic waves within the materials to better understand their dependence on the operating state of the battery. The modeling of experimental results from CEA / Liten will be based on assumptions describing the physical modifications of the materials that constitute a battery during its operation. The ultrasonic propagation will be simulated using tools available at the CEA / List, notably the CIVA platform, or using new models to be developed.

Postdoc position: Intermediate temperature sodium sulphur battery for residential energy storage — NaSTOR prototype

Postdoc position: Intermediate temperature sodium sulphur battery for residential energy storage — NaSTOR prototype

Research
Scientific aim: Energy storage concepts will be increasingly used in the near future as a result of increased implementation of renewable energy sources in energy infrastructure. In this aspect, batteries are considered as suitable candidates for compensating the intermittency of the renewable sources like solar and wind energy. Sodium-sulphur batteries (NaSBs), are considered as potential energy storage systems for stationary electric storage applications. The main advantages of NaSBs are the high energy density, high efficiency of charge/discharge, long cycle life, and that they are fabricated from abundant and low cost materials. NaSBs batteries employ sodium (Na) and sulphur (S) as active electrode materials, and beta-alumina (Al2O3) ceramic membranes as the Na+-conducting electrolyte. Traditional NaSBs operate at high temperatures of 300-350C, where both of the electrodes are in a molten state for having the optimum electrochemical reactivity, and for the beta-alumina membranes to have the optimum ionic conductivity. However, safety issues related with high temperature operation triggered novel NaSBs battery concepts, which aims at operating temperatures just above the melting point of sodium (i.e. 120-150C). These operating conditions introduce challenges that need to be addressed for optimizing the new NaSBs.

Job description
Responsibilities and tasks:

  • Cathode formulations characterization with suitable electrochemical methods and operando Raman spectroscopy;

DIFFER is developing and supporting a national network on fundamental energy research and is closely collaborating with academic institutions, research institutes and industry. The position will be based at DIFFER — the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (www.differ.nl) and the working locations will be at TU Eindhoven and (part-time) at the Industry Park IPKW in Arnhem.
