Job description

A position for Advanced Data Analysis in Plasma Proteomics is available in the group of Associate Prof. Jochen Schwenk, located at SciLifeLab in Stockholm. The group conducts high throughput and multiplexed immunoassay analysis of plasma to explore biosignatures of health and diseases.

A successful candidate will be involved in multivariate data analysis and data integration conducted within interdisciplinary projects. The aims are to model the generated plasma biosignatures with clinical information as well as with other omics data (e.g. RNAseq, NGS). The aim is to improve our understanding of high dimensional data (big data) and create knowledge beyond identifying differentially abundant proteins. The task of a successful applicant will be to use modelling for multidimensional and network analysis, as well as methods of machine learning towards non-linear dimensionality reduction of the highly dimensional data. The projects will disentangle information for these complex data structures and provide novel opportunities for studying health and disease.


The applicant should hold a PhD (or Master’s Degree with 2+ years of experience) in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, or of a related field. A PhD should be awarded less than 3 years before the deadline of the application. The applicant must have a strong background in integrative data analyses such as of omics data and a profound knowledge about biology. A keen interest in describing geno- or phenotypes through modelling approaches is of merit. Independent competence and in-depth knowledge in programming (e.g. R, Python, Pearl) and biostatistics with preferred experience in multivariate analysis, machine learning and modelling. A successful candidate should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal), be motivated to work in a team and interdisciplinary projects.

PMUT and CMUT technologies pave the way to the design of new ultrasound sensor systems with high density of sensor integration. In conjunction with dedicated conditioning and actuating electronic circuits, systems based on matrices of CMUT/PMUT transducers should be as performant as classical radar systems while consuming much less power.The PostDoc will consist in designing a fully integrated conditioning and actuating circuit that will allow the dynamic adaptation of the sensor matrix at both reception and transmission. The close collaboration with technologists and radar experts should lead to an optimized solution in terms of power consumption that should be well suited to the CMUT/PMUT matrices approach.Applicant should have a significant experience in the design of analog and mixed integrated circuits using cadence tools. The work will take place in a laboratory dedicated to the design of high performances analog and mixed integrated circuits for sensors, actuators and power management.

Job description

You will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Develop different algorithms and software packages to align and reconstruction tilt series acquired by HAADF-STEM, STEM-EDX or STEM-EELS.
  • Interpret the reconstructions to solve materials science problems in the field of nanophysics.
  • Disseminate results at international conferences and in high IF peer reviewed journals.
  • Effectively share your knowledge with other (internal and external) team members.
  • Supervise student projects.

Your profile:

  • PhD in Physics.
  • Experience on scientific programming is required.
  • Experience on electron tomography and/or computation imaging is preferred.

As a scientific collaborator, you will contribute to the research in fusion material and to the program for ITER and DEMO, aimed at characterization of the neutron irradiation effects in high heat flux materials and materials for high temperature applications.

More specifically, your function consists in the following:

  • carry out microstructural characterization of, by means of transmission electron and scanning electron microscope (with EBSD and EDX analyses), baseline and advanced fusion materials as well as new composites for DEMO applications;
  • contribute to and get the scientific publications and reports ready on your own;
  • follow-up of mechanical tests (including high temperature tests), carrying out of advanced data analysis of mechanical tests on fusion materials exposed to various fusion contexts (neutron irradiation, high temperature, thermal shock, ion irradiation…);
  • carry out advanced characterization of materials: thermal desorption spectroscopy, nano-indentation, nuclear reaction-analysis and X-ray spectroscopy;
  • assist in guiding Master and PhD students in the field of fusion. Initiate and monitor a Master’s thesis, support the collaboration with external partners including the exchanges of staff/students and use of partners’ facilities;
  • help maintaining contacts with existing and potential customers for running and future projects in relation to fusion research.


  • Master’s degree in Engineering or PhD in Science or Applied Sciences, preferably in materials science;
  • experience in experimental research on fusion materials for the first wall is essential;
  • expertise in microstructural or mechanical research on fusion materials is an important asset;
  • scientific publications (A1) related to the study of fusion materials or the study of tungsten based materials are required;
  • knowledge of radiation protection is a strong added value;
  • being prepared to work in controlled areas;
  • organizational awareness and good writing skills;

The Staff Scientist position is for an academic faculty member who is specialist in research work connected essentially to the use and development department´s large-scale research infrastructures and complex research equipment. Typical distribution of working hours: 50% service, 30% research, 20% teaching.

The tasks include:

  • Coordination of major infrastructure purchases and installations;
  • Providing technically multitalented maintenance, training and development of the most demanding equipment in department’s Micronova laboratories:
    • MOCVD tools (3 units);
    • Graphene CVD tool;

Key duties and responsibilities

We are looking for a creative and highly motivated researcher willing to work closely with an industrial collaborator (Leonardo), and also as part of a UK National Centre. Regular communication with, and reporting to, Leonardo is an important part of the role; also the post holder is expected to take part in broader interactions within CIM-Laser, including more general industrial outreach, and some national and international travel is expected.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct and lead their own experiments whilst also supervising the activities of junior group members and PhD students.

General tasks will involve scientific research; analysis and interpretation of data; daily oversight of the activities of postgraduate and undergraduate project students in the laboratory; communication with other investigators involved in this collaborative project; preparation of scientific papers; presentation of research at conferences.

In detail the postholder is required to:

  • Design and carry out scientific and engineering experiments using high power laser systems, and to undertake associated analysis;
  • Develop, and where appropriate model, a theoretical understanding of the high power laser process;
  • Present research findings and plans at regular internal meetings, and meetings with the industrial partner;
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff, research students and any other students who may be assisting with the research;
  • Prepare and edit scientific papers;
  • Present research findings at conferences;
  • Participate in the broader work of CIM-Laser, including industrial outreach e.g. at workshops, conferences or other meetings;
  • Assist in the day-to-day maintenance of the experimental facilities, liaising with companies and external collaborators;
  • Assist the development of student research skills, and contribute to the assessment of student knowledge in the context of teaching assistant and supervision duties.

The ideal candidate will have a strong theoretical understanding and recent experimental experience in one or more of the following fields: applications of high power lasers in manufacturing; ultrashort pulsed lasers; applied optics.

Education, Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria:

  • Possess and maintain sufficient breadth or depth of specialist discipline knowledge and or research methods and techniques to work in own area;
  • Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant area of lasers or applied optics or related subject (or a PhD thesis submitted by the start date of the project);
  • Experience of experimental design;
  • Appropriate publication record for stage in career;
  • Experience with lasers and/or optics applied to research in a relevant discipline;
  • Must have proven academic ability and a demonstrable high level of technical competence in experimental science/engineering and the analysis/modelling of the results;

  • Ability to articulate research work, both in technical reports/papers and by oral presentation;
  • Ability to formulate and progress work on own initiative;

INL has opened a position for Research Fellow with a strong background in (scanning) transmission electron microscopy study of 2D materials, e.g. BN, graphen, and TMDs, to join the Quantum Materials, Science and Technology Department in the Research Group led by Dr. Zhongchang Wang.

The main focus will be on establishing an atomic-scale understanding of point and line defects and heterointerfaces and their fundamental impact on functional properties of 2D materials.

The Research Fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in the group who are capable of preparing a variety of 2D materials for potential electronic and optoelectronic applications. Transmission electron microscopies provide potentials for profound insights into the fundamental issues in 2D material systems by directly imaging defects and interfaces at the atomic scale. In particular, scanning transmission electron microscopy equipped with an aberration corrector (two aberration-corrected STEM currently at INL: one is probe-corrected ChemiSTEM and the other is double-corrected FEI CUBE. FIB is also available at INL) offers an unprecedented opportunity to probe details of atomic structure and electronic states of 2D materials with a sub-angstrom electron probe and thus allows for direct imaging of individual atoms in 2D materials. Important scientific questions can be addressed by correlating structures to functional properties of 2D materials on a quantum level.

Job Role & Key Responsibilities

The Research Fellow will undertake the main activities and responsibilities:

  • Apply state-of-the-art (scanning) transmission electron microscopes with particular emphasis on the HAADF-STEM, ABF-STEM and EELS analysis of 2D materials, e.g. transition metal dichalcogenides, h-BN, and graphene;
  • Capable of bridging structural defects to functional properties of 2D materials;
  • Collaborate and work with other researchers, students, or interns;
  • Collect and analyse experimental data;
  • Prepare research publications;
  • Communicate results at professional meetings.

Job Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Materials, Physics, Chemistry or related field;
  • Extensive experience in operating conventional TEM and Scanning TEM;
  • Sufficient fundamental knowledge in materials science and/or applied physics;
