Powder Based Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing): Modelling and Simulation

Powder Based Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing): Modelling and Simulation.

Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

Project Description

An amazing opportunity has emerged for an enthusiastic student to work on a joint project between University of Strathclyde Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (UK) and Macquarie University (Australia). A joint PhD will be awarded upon successful completion of the project and the Student will spend 50% of their studies at Strathclyde and 50% at Macquarie.

During this PhD the successful candidate will focus on the Particle Bed Fusion process in additive manufacturing. The project can be classified under broader areas of granular flows and complex fluids. The PBF technique is a promising AM technology which has recently been exploited by various industries such as automotive, aerospace and medical. It uses polymeric or metallic particles which are spread on a fabrication piston to form a thin powder bed with a roller or blade. A laser (or electron) beam is then focused onto the bed which scans a raster pattern of a single layer of the part by “melting” or “sintering” the powder grains in its path. This process is repeated until the product is successfully fabricated (See the open access paper at https://goo.gl/vf1Tb3 and https://goo.gl/fVHR7e for more information)

Although the technology can potentially revolutionise the manufacturing land scape, highly complex and multi-physics nature of the process is hindering the development of the technology and introduction of new materials. As a result, material selection for PBF devices and their design, optimisation and operation currently remains an empirical task which depends on the intuition and ”know-how” of highly skilled engineers.

This problem will be tackled by an extended Discrete Element Method (DEM) to allow for including the effects of complex contact and material mechanics in particle based simulations. The extended DEM capability enables the simulation of multi-scale phenomena such as sintering and growth and can be coupled with Lattice-Boltzmann Techniques to simulate particle melting.

The successful candidate is expected to develop significant expertise in areas of granular flows, complex fluids and High Performance Computing. The student will benefit from the collegial environment provided by the Mechanical and Aerospace Department and in particular, James Weir Fluid Laboratory to thrive in this field and will also have chance experience two international research environment at Strathclyde and Macquarie. This will allow the student to complete their PhD to the highest standards.

IMPORTANT: Student will need excellent programming skills or a willingness to learn. Applications from Mathematics and Physics students is also encouraged.

Funding Notes

Full studentship is available for 3 years and will cover the cost of travel between Strathclyde and Macquarie as well. However, award of the studentship may take a couple of month due to administrative complexities of setting up a joint PhD.

IMPORTANT: Note that a full Studentship for the duration of study at Strathclyde is only available for EU/UK nationals. International students need to cover a fee difference during their study at Strathclyde (1.5 years). Please contact Dr Haeri for more details.

Ultrafast spectroscopy of perovskite optoelectronic materials

Ultrafast spectroscopy of perovskite optoelectronic materials

 Full or part time
School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington

Project Description

Hybrid perovskites are emerging materials for various optoelectronic applications. The excellent electrical and optical properties and material tunability of the perovskite-based materials have greatly advanced the device performance. Fundamentally understanding the photophysical mechanisms is the key to the material design and device optimization. In this project, we will employ ultrafast spectroscopy techniques to explore the photoexcitation dynamics in the crucial timescales of these new generation semiconductors. In collaboration with world-leading materials and device groups, we aim to advance the knowledge of the critical mechanisms related to the applications for photovoltaics, light emitting diodes, and lasers.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Kai Chen, associated with the ultrafast spectroscopy group led by Assoc. Prof. Justin Hodgkiss [1]. The group is based at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) [2], which is located in Wellington, the thriving capital city of New Zealand [3]. We offer a great opportunity to operate and develop advanced spectroscopic systems. The successful candidate will also visit international collaborators for the sample and device preparation, including Prof. Henry Snaith’s group in Oxford, and Prof. Zeger Hens’ group in Ghent.

We are seeking a highly motivated person interested in spectroscopy experiments and advanced materials with a good understanding of physical chemistry or physics. Experience in optics, nonlinear optics, and spectroscopy research would be a plus but not necessary. Applicants should have an engineering, chemistry or physics degree equivalent to the 4-year BSc (Honours) degree in New Zealand, with 1st class Honours, or an MSc. Candidates should satisfy the requirements for admission as a PhD candidate at Victoria University of Wellington [4].

To apply, please send a CV, academic record, and the names and contact details of two referees to with “PhD perovskite” in the subject line.

Funding Notes

The scholarship provides a generous non-taxed stipend of NZ$27,000 per annum plus the PhD tuition fee for three years.
