The Centre for Industrial Ultrasonics (CIU) consists of a team of over 30 researchers across the Faculty of Science, led by four highly experienced academics who have run a number of very successful, large scale research projects.

Project Outline
In this PhD, FE modelling will be used to develop novel techniques for the successful inspection and assessment of complex pipe geometries containing welds, attachments or multiple flaws. Techniques for focusing and/or the prediction of flaw sizes will be investigated through modelling. Experimental validation will be carried out alongside the project, and the experimental and modelling results will be used together in order to achieve improvements to the existing capability in complex pipe.

Project description

This project makes use of cutting-edge experimental laser science to build a high-energy vacuum ultraviolet (100 to 200 nm) to mid-infrared light source – with the eventual aim of creating a table-top synchrotron replacement for advanced ultrafast spectroscopy. This project is based on the rich nonlinear dynamics of intense ultrafast light pulse propagation in hollow-core fibres filled with gases. Primarily you will be working in a new precision laser laboratory, with high energy few-cycle laser pulses and vacuum systems. The ideal candidate would also join our numerical modelling efforts to fully investigate the nonlinear dynamics involved.
You will join the small but growing team working on HISOL (see http://lupo-lab.com/projects/ ) which is a multimillion EURO funded European Research Council project.
The laboratory of ultrafast physics and optics (LUPO) was established in the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPAQS) at Heriot-Watt University in 2016, to investigate ultrafast optical electronics with laser pulses through experiment and numerical modelling.
The Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPAQS) carries out broad range of world-leading research in photonic physics, engineering photonics and quantum sciences. IPAQS builds on Heriot-Watt’s 40+ years of history in world-leading research in photonics and spans a broad range of research – from lasers and optical sensing approaches to future manufacturing methods to the fundamentals of quantum information. As our title suggests, there will be a special focus on quantum sciences and its close relationship with photonics-based technology.

 V. Exceptional Lightning Discharges — Investigation of the properties of outstanding discharge processes

 Project Description

This project investigates the properties of exceptional lightning dis-charges. In particular, the polarity, intensity, and the spatial and temporal evolution of outstanding discharges processes will be determined. These important properties of lightning flashes are inferred from the re-mote sensing with radio wave measurements. The radio waves are recorded with arrays of radio receivers on various spatial scales ranging from thousands of km down to just one km. These measurements of radio waves on different scales are used to determine critically important information on the physical processes associated with exceptional lightning discharges.
These research challenges are approached within the SAINT project (Science and Innovation with Thunderstorms) supported by the European Commission. SAINT is a coordinated program of research that includes satellite and ground observations, modelling and lab experiments – mostly from a geophysical perspective, but with strong interfaces to plasma technology and relevant industries. The SAINT consortium is composed of 10 academic institutions and 9 industrial partners and it employs 15 PhD students to integrate leading techniques from different sectors toward an investigation of the fundamental mechanisms of atmospheric discharges.
The successful candidate will participate in meetings with the teams around two novel space missions, the Atmosphere-Space Interaction Monitor (ASIM) of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the micro-satellite TARANIS of the French Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES), and gain insights into the next generation of lightning imagers on-board of geostationary satellites (GOES-R, MTG and FY-4).
The project is allied by field work in southern Europe, summer schools and training events throughout the duration of the project. In particular, the projects entails measurements, analysis and interpretation of the electro-magnetic waves (optical and radio) emitted by lightning dis-charges and transient luminous events.
At the end of the project, the successful candidate will be able to plan and conduct complex projects and manage the implications of research toward applications in industry and for the needs of governmental agencies.

The successful candidate will have a first class degree in science, e.g., physics (astronomy, plasma physics, geoscience, and meteorology), mathematics, or electronic and electrical engineering and is interested and fit to participate in demanding field work in southern Europe.

 Funding Notes: The project offers full employment at the University of Bath (£23,500 basic salary + £4,217 mobility allowance) through the European Commission and the Science and Innovation with Thunderstorms (SAINT) project. The position is open to applicants from around the world, with the limitation that at the time of recruitment by the University of Bath, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.

 VI. PhD in Examination of residual stress state in pipeline girth welds subject to high plastic deformation

 Project Description

There is still very limited knowledge on the residual stress state of the girth welded pipelines subject to high plastic deformations and also the general residual stress state of narrow gap welded pipe spools is still subject of a number of academic and company internal research activities. Therefore, it is aimed at filling a technological gap via this PhD by examining the behavior of weld residual stresses in a pipeline girth weld (of API 5L X65 ferritic steel) manufactured using a narrow gap welding procedure with and without circumferentially oriented cracks under conditions of high plastic deformation and quantify the level of relaxation if applicable. The examination of the state of residual stress will commence with finite element analyses, which will form the core of this study and then will be supported with experimental studies if required.

Candidate Requirements
Candidates should have a relevant degree at 2.1 minimum, or an equivalent overseas degree in mechanical engineering, material science, metallurgy or physics. Candidates with suitable work experience and strong capacity in numerical modelling and experimental skills are particularly welcome to apply. Overseas applicants should also submit IELTS results (minimum 6.5) if applicable.

NSIRC is a state-of-the-art postgraduate engineering facility established and managed by structural integrity specialist TWI, working closely with a number of academic and industrial partners. NSIRC aims to deliver cutting edge research and highly qualified personnel to its key industrial partners

VII. Electrochemical Flow-Cells as Enablers for Catalytic Synthetic Processes

In this project, the student will employ electrochemistry as an elegant solution to the limitations of catalytic processes at high oxidation states. By controlling the applied potential and designing flow electrochemical reactors, the desired SET of the metal catalyst can be achieved selectively. This will take advantage of our recent success in using electrochemical flow-cells to make organometallic catalysts and to change oxidation state selectively [1, 2]. Such flow processes are highly efficient, often resulting in quantitative conversion of electricity into chemical yield.
The project is best suited to a student with strong background and interest in synthetic chemistry and catalysis. No prior knowledge of reactor design or electrochemistry is required, as training will be provided for these important transferable skills. The student will also benefit from interdisciplinary training and seminar programs in process chemistry as a member of the Institute of Process Research & Development, Leeds (http://www.iprd.leeds.ac.uk/).

VIII. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher in photonics with quantum light emitters in novel condensed matter systems (a PhD project)

Applications are invited for an Early Stage Researcher position in physics and photonic devices of quantum light emitters produced using a range of novel materials including atomically thin 2D materials (transition metal dichalcogenides, boron nitride) as well as III-V semiconductor quantum dots grown by recently developed droplet epitaxy. This position is a part of a multi-national Horizon-2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN ‘4PHOTON’. The successful individual will be employed as a salaried researcher at the University of Sheffield, and will study for a PhD in the physics of quantum light emitters in novel condensed matter systems.
In this project we will target development of novel single-photon emitters with a goal to integrate them to photonic structures, and in a longer-term use them for ‘on-chip’ quantum information processing. We will aim to study several materials with a goal of selecting the system with the best performance. An important task will be design and fabrication of novel structures comprising single atomic layers of 2D semiconductors (such as transition metal dichalcogenides or boron nitride) to enable deterministic positioning and control of single-photon emitters (SPEs). Another important task will be coupling of both III-V and 2D SPEs to photonic devices to enable efficient single-photon collection or routing on a chip. This will lead to quantum optics experiments ‘on a chip’, an attractive route to quantum information processing.
The successful candidate will join the 2D Materials group of 5 PhD students and 2 postdocs (also part of a large inorganic semiconductors group of about 50 researchers), and will be trained to use a modern semiconductor clean room and the state-of-the-art optical laboratories in Sheffield. We enjoy a range of collaborations through many national and international projects. The new student will be fully involved in these activities as well as in the wide program of training and exchanges within 4PHOTON ITN.
The researcher’s salary rates and additional mobility, career and travel allowances will be as per the Marie Skłodowska-Curie program, which provides a very attractive reward package including relocation funds.
Applicants for this post are expected to have completed a Masters in solid state physics or a related discipline. Experience in optical spectroscopy and use of a clean room is also desirable.

IX.  PhD position in Materials Theory, Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland: Theory and simulation of thermoelectric materials near structural phase transitions

Theory and simulation of thermoelectric materials near structural phase transitions
1 PhD position is available in the Materials Theory Group at the Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland, under the supervision of Dr. Ivana Savic (http://ivanasavic.gitlab.io) and Prof. Stephen Fahy (http://research.ucc.ie/profiles/D006/sfahy). The position is fully funded for up to 4 years and will commence in January 2017 or soon thereafter.
The goal is to develop a range of computational methods to model thermoelectric transport properties of materials near phase transitions. This will involve state-of-the-art electronic structure methods to describe electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom and their interactions. Thermoelectric transport processes will be simulated using the Boltzmann transport and more advanced approaches.

This is a highly collaborative project between the groups at Tyndall and Queen’s University Belfast headed by Prof. Jorge Kohanoff. It will also involve collaboration with experimental groups at Tyndall, Ben Gurion University (Israel) and Stanford (USA), working on material synthesis and characterization, including ultrafast X-ray techniques.
PhD applicants must hold a first class honours degree or Masters in Physics or a related discipline before the start of the studentship. A strong background in solid state physics and interest in material modelling and computer simulation are required, as well as proficiency in English. Short descriptions of the projects the applicants have worked on and the codes they have developed should be included in the application.

XI. Innovative monitoring techniques for batteries and hydrogen fuel cells

Project Description

The interest in hydrogen as energy vector is nowadays rapidly growing, driven by the urgent demand for clean and sustainable energy generation, and supported by the recent achievements in the development of fuel cell technology, which has the potential to allow a highly efficient conversion from the chemical energy stored in hydrogen to the widely employable electrical energy. In particular, automotive applications attract a great interest because of the global need for decreasing the polluting emissions.
In this scenario, the PhD project will aim at tackling one of the most critical challenges that are still hindering a massive penetration of this technology into the market, namely the increase of efficiency and reliability without increasing the system cost.
The aim of the PhD is to optimize the monitoring system for larger-scale fuel cells and batteries and to prove the feasibility of this approach in a real application scenario. In more details, the student will set up a bench for experimental tests, implement bespoke real-time signal processing and state estimation algorithms and optimize the hardware design. Some mathematical modelling will be also required in all main stages of the project.
The project has a multi-disciplinary nature, involving aspects of signal processing, power electronics and electrochemistry. All the required competences are available within the interdisciplinary research Centre for advanced monitoring of electrochemical power sources, led by Dr. Ferrero and involving researchers from different Departments and Institutes. Therefore, the student will benefit from an interdisciplinary supervisory team and from additional support from other staff. Because of the significant industrial relevance of the project, collaborations with industrial companies are also very likely, particularly in the automotive sector, but not limited to it.
Students with a background in electrical engineering, electronics, chemistry, or similar areas are all welcome to apply. A 2:1 degree or higher in related disciplines is required. Depending on the student’s background and interests, the project can be tuned to better match the student’s competences.

The PhD project offered by Professor Z Q Lang is concerned with the development of the theories and methods for the frequency analysis and design of nonlinear systems and the application of these theories and methods in a wide range of science and engineering areas.
Linear system frequency domain analysis and design theories and methods are the basis of the technologies in telecommunication, control, signal processing, mechanical and civil structural vibration suppression and health monitoring, etc a wide range of areas. Given the inherent nonlinear behaviours of practical science and engineering systems, and some beneficial effects that nonlinearity can bring to engineering designs that have recently be revealed by our studies at Sheffield, the extension of well-established linear system frequency domain theories and methods to the nonlinear case has considerable scientific and engineering significance.

Depending on the interests of the candidates, the PhD project can focus on the further development of the nonlinear system frequency domain analysis and design theories and methods, or be concerned with the application of the novel techniques that have been proposed at Sheffield to tackle different science and engineering problems. We have established a range of national and international collaborations to facilitate the application studies including, for example, building vibration isolation during earth quakes and signal analysis for eddy current based structural health monitoring etc. Many of the studies are supported by funding from UK EPSRC and Royal Society, which provides a very good research environment including laboratory facilities for the PhD projects.

2. Postdoctoral vacancy (3 years) on multi-scale modelling of fatigue in 3D printed metals

Job description

Since its development in 1983, 3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) has received a lot of attention as a potentially ground-breaking technology. Several companies are already investigating the use of AM for structural applications: GE has demonstrated the possibility of printing titanium fuel injectors for their LEAP engine, EADS has printed a nacelle hinge bracket for the Airbus A320, Boeing is printing plastic inlet ducts for high-altitude aircrafts, hip implants and other prosthetics are exploiting the design freedom of AM.

AM of metal alloys yields great potential for the aerospace industry (and others) as it allows the generation of geometrically complex structures with high specific strength, low density and high corrosion resistance. The static mechanical properties of AM metals are well-documented. However, most structural parts will eventually be exposed to cyclic fatigue loads. While factors-of-safety and regular inspection can mitigate the risks of failure, understanding the fatigue behavior is essential to fully exploit the capabilities of AM. A study by the US Air Force has indicated high-cycle fatigue as the single biggest cause of turbine engine failures in military aircrafts (extensively using the Ti-6Al-4V alloy). For titanium-based bio-medical applications, the importance of fatigue behavior has resulted in the definition of a dedicated standard (ISO 7206). The understanding of the fatigue behavior of AM metal alloys is presently limited to basic S-N curves (showing the relation between applied stress level ‘S’ and number of cycles before failure ‘N’) and investigation on influencing parameters. As the domain of fatigue on additively manufactured metals is still relatively young, several research topics remain unexplored.

The goal of this postdoctoral research is to develop numerical tools to design and improve the design of AM structural components for safe fatigue life.

Only candidates with a PhD degree should apply. The candidate should have a strong background in multi-scale modelling, preferably combined with experience with additively manufactured metals and/or fatigue of metals.

 Post doctoral Position: Material behavior under laser irradiation at high temperature. Interaction with neutral and active gases.

During laser processing of materials, at moderate intensity (kW/cm2-MW/cm2), materials are in the three phases: solid, liquid and vapor. Since many years, PIMM works on interaction laser matter in relation with welding, drilling cutting and additive manufacturing. Another application concerns gas industry for security of the O2 production plan. Confined Laser setup is unique and useful to study combustion of metals in the presence of pure O2.

Among recent key issues for interaction laser matter concerns the thermo-physical (thermal conductivity, surface tension, viscosity) and optical (absorption) properties of materials beyond their melting point.

PIMM has been developed an original method of pyrometry of field which allows a precise measurement of the temperature in a range between the liquid phase and the phase vapor of metallic materials heated by CW Laser( Liquid Phase combustion of iron in oxygen atmposphere- M Muller, H El-Rabii, R Fabbro J Matter science 2015 0:3337-3350);

Another promising technique allows the determination of the tension of surface in merging metallic droplet using laser heating.

One of the objective of this project is the implementation of new set-up: the aerodynamic levitation of droplets heated by laser and the coupling with optical pyrometry with high-speed camera to evaluate thermophysical properties as a function of temperature. These experimental parts are coupled with inverse methods, using the multi-physical code COMSOL, to determine properties and validate them.

  • An extension will concern the influence of ambiant gas on laser interaction. It concerns
  • the propagation of a metallic combustion in presence of oxygen under pressure,
  • the control of the properties of oxides so generated,
  • The understanding of the mechanisms of diffusion of the oxygen in molten metals.

Expertise: experimental, thermic, Material transformation, laser interaction… Materials: iron pure/Steel S355 / Stainless steel 316L, Nickel base alloys.

The increasing number of frequency bands having to be dealt with in mobile phone systems require a huge number of band pass filters in such systems. In this context, the capability to provide frequency tunable resonators and filters is seen as a key enabling element in future wireless transmission systems.

CEA-LETI has been working for more than 10 years on the development of resonators and filters exploiting the propagation of guided elastic waves in piezoelectric thin films. It has also proposed several concepts for frequency agile resonators and filters.

The purpose of this post-doc will be to further develop these ideas and to apply them to the design of demonstrators matching realistic specifications. In collaboration with the other member of the project team, more focused on fabrication in clean rooms, the candidate will propose innovative structures demonstrating frequency tuning of reconfigurability, and will take in charge their electrical characterization.

We are looking for a highly motivated post-doc to take up a research position on the integration of III-V semiconductors on 200 mm silicon photonics wafers, based on a novel integration strategy that we are developing, called transfer printing. The processes will be developed in the imec R&D labs after which it will be transferred to a commercial foundry. The goal is to integrate III-V near-infrared light sources and photodetectors on silicon photonic integrated circuits for sensing applications. The work will be carried out in the context of a large European project (MicroPrince) where several industrial players are involved. The work can be extended to the integration of other opto-electronic devices in different wavelength ranges as well, serving different applications.

Position summary: The position is a one-year with possibility of extension to start on March 1st, 2017 with a main location at CNRS-LIRMM/Univ. European mobility will be required for a close interaction with project partners.

The Electronics and Informatics department (ETRO) belongs to the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). ETRO performs research on the representation, processing, transmission and visualization of multidimensional signals. ETRO has built a large international collaboration network with a wide variety of academic institutions, industrial partners and R&D centres, and participates in numerous fundamental, strategic and applied research projects in these domains.

Research areas

In recent years, we have seen the convergence of computer vision and computer graphics, addressing highly challenging, yet unsolved problems in research areas such as 3D video, free viewpoint video and 3D reconstruction. Research in these areas aims at providing live accurate modelling and rendering of dynamic 3D scenes, and finds numerous applications in domains such as multimedia, robot vision and automotive industry.

The research focuses on the generation of dynamic 3D models based on multicamera systems. Research topics include the design of new methods for point cloud processing in multicamera systems, sensor fusion, 3D pose estimation, 3D surface generation for non-rigid point clouds, as well as the design of efficient transforms and compression systems for this type of data. Besides scientific challenges, the position provides a great opportunity to work closely together with experienced ETRO researchers active in image and video processing, 3D graphics and data compression as well as to collaborate in running projects with prestigious academic and industrial partners active in these fields.


Candidates for a PhD position (4 years) should prove strong academic record in engineering, computer sciences, mathematics or physics. Relevant work in computer vision / sensor fusion / data compression / 3D graphics is must.

If you are candidate for a postdoc position (2 years), you must already have extensive experience in computer vision and an excellent track record with relevant publications in renowned journals and conferences.

Job description

This is a two-year position in laser processing of materials. The research project is centered on the development of new methods to grow semiconductor crystals in restricted geometries without using molecular beam epitaxy. This research will have implications for the fabrication of high-speed electrical devices as well as a range of optoelectronics.

Confinement of the material inside a dielectric capsule together with laser processing has been demonstrated to allow recrystallization and modification of the local composition of semiconducting materials, and we will explore the extension of these recent results to different materials and geometries. The project will start with semiconductor-core fibers, and move to planar structures compatible with standard integrated circuits.


The successful candidate will have outstanding experimental skills and a strong background in solid state materials, including, but not limited to, an understanding of phase diagrams, experience with semiconductor and optoelectronic device characterization. Experience with standard thin film deposition is expected. Familiarity with materials characterization techniques such as SEM/EDX, XPS, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence are desirable. The candidate should be ambitious but collaborative, organized and self-motivated, capable of working alone as well as in a fast-paced group atmosphere.  The candidate must have received the PhD within the last three years.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with industrial partners in a larger project that integrates the technology challenges for globally interoperable smart cities.

— Candidates should have a PhD Degree (Computer Science or Electrical Engineering) and the strong background in middleware systems and communication protocols used in IoT (HTTP, CoAP, MQTT, oneM2M, open source, semantics, ontology),

— Strong publication records, and good communication skills in spoken and written English,
— Work experience in relevant research projects is preferable (IoT or smart cities related projects),
— Knowledge in semantics, interoperability testing, IoT platforms is an advantage,
— Proficiency in a programming language such as Java, C and Python.
The position is offered on the level of post-doctoral research staff, initially one year with a potential for further extension up to two years.

Pasteur Institute Doctoral Research Scholarship for French and Foreign Scientists in France, 2017

 The Pasteur Institute International Division allocates funding (twice yearly) to promote and aid completion of doctoral theses for both French and foreign scientists in institutes of the Pasteur Institute International Network located outside mainland France.

The Pasteur Institute is a private, non-profit foundation. Its mission is to help prevent and treat diseases, mainly those of infectious origin, through research, teaching, and public health initiatives.

Course Level: Scholarship is available to pursue research.

Study Subject: The research topic can be related to any theme developed in laboratories at International Network institutes, such as infectious diseases (infectious pathophysiology, immunology, microbiology, epidemiology, virology, parasitology), and public health activities (diagnosis, surveillance, resistance, etc.).

Scholarship Award: Funding covers living and insurance expenses (€1,400 net per month). One return fare between the home country and internship location is also funded.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for scholarship:

The applicant should hold a Masters degree or equivalent diploma (completion of 5 years of higher education). Applicants who have already begun their thesis may not apply.

Nationality: Both French and foreign scientists are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The program is open to all nationalities.
