The University of Exeter is offering up to 20 full-fee scholarships for international students to pursue a postgraduate research programme. The awards are available to students in any subject area available at the University of Exeter and at all campuses.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing the postgraduate programme.

Study Subject: These awards are available to students in any subject area available at the University of Exeter and at all campuses.

Scholarship Award: There will be 20 full-fee scholarships available for entry during the 2017/18 academic year. Successful applicants will have their tuition and bench fees paid by the University for up to 3.5 years (42 months). A research allowance will be provided and a stipend to support living costs will be paid at current UK research council levels, currently £14,295 per year.

Scholarship can be taken in the UK

Eligibility: For all postgraduate degrees, both taught and research, students will normally be required to have obtained or expect to obtain a first degree equivalent to at least a UK 2:1 Honours degree. They will need at least a 2:1 or its equivalent in order to be considered by any of the main funding bodies.

Nationality: The UK and international students can apply for full-fee scholarships.

U.S. Department of State is inviting applications for Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD). The programme provides one semester scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students from around the world for non-degree full-time study combined with community service, professional development, and cultural enrichment.

Course Level: The Global UGRAD program offers cultural/academic exchange through a non-degree program for a semester at a university in the U.S.

Study Subject: Students from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply for the Global UGRAD Program. Possible fields of study include the humanities, arts, social sciences, mathematical science, natural and physical sciences, engineering and applied science.

Finalists will be selected on the basis of academic excellence, leadership potential, and their preparedness for study in the United States. The Global UGRAD Program is open to anyone who is/has:

  • Over 18 years of age;
  • A citizen of a Global UGRAD participating country, currently residing in that country;
  • Enrolled as an undergraduate in good standing at any accredited university, public or private, and has at least one semester remaining at their home university at the conclusion of the Global UGRAD program;
  • Completed secondary education in their home country;
  • A solid command of written and spoken English (English Language training for some finalists is possible);
  • Able to begin studies in the United States in August 2017 or January 2018 (selected participants may not defer to a later date);
  • Eligible to receive and maintain the U.S. student exchange visa (J-1) required for the program;
  • Cleared by a physician to participate in the program;
  • Committed to returning to their home country after the completion of the program.

Postdoc positions in integrated photonics are available in the research group of Prof. Milos Popovic at Boston University, at the BU Photonics Center. The successful candidate will take a leadership role in one or more of the following areas:

  • Energy-efficient photonic interconnects on CMOS chips.  This work will advance and expand on our recent demonstration of the world’s first microprocessor that communicates using light (Sun et al., Nature 2015);
  • Nonlinear integrated photonics and on-chip light generation, to demonstrate advanced on-chip continuous-wave, optical frequency comb, and pulsed light sources, light amplifiers, wavelength conversion, and light entropy and noise manipulation devices in Si and III-V’s.
  • Quantum integrated photonics, aimed to demonstrate novel entangled photon light sources and complete quantum photonic circuits on chip that enable novel quantum communication, metrology and computation applications, and provide a platform for novel quantum physics experiments.
  • Chip-scale nano-optomechanics, an exciting area at the interface of silicon photonics and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), and their interaction through light forces, radiation pressure, and the interaction of light and acoustic/elastic waves at the nanoscale.  We are using light forces to create photonic devices that are self-adaptive, and have unique nonlinear dynamics properties that may lead to novel nanoscale machines and photonic signal processing concepts.
  • Photonic-electronic systems on chip with applications to neuromorphic computing, high performance analog-to-digital conversion, brain sensing, RF signal processing and space technology such as passive microwave Earth sensing.
  • Fundamental first-principles electromagnetics and semiconductor physics based invention of novel photonic device concepts and theoretical constructs in photonics applied to any problem.

We are seeking candidates with a strong foundation in a few of:

  • Integrated silicon photonics theory, simulation, and design;
  • Experimental device characterization; RF photonic measurements;
  • Semiconductor physics (p-n junctions, MOSFETs, BJTs, etc.)
  • Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS);
  • Theoretical and experimental quantum optics;
  • CMOS processes

Who can apply?
